With Spark Ventures’ first Young Professionals trip to Nicaragua taking place now, we are getting a first-hand look at the experience, through the eyes of Jessica Dangles, who also serves as a member of the Young Professionals of Spark (YPS). Read her first blog post here.

Hola de Nicaragua! Just a few days into our Nicaragua adventure, and I was already overwhelmed by the beauty of the country and generosity of the people.

After my flight landed in Managua on Wednesday, I was greeted by the Spark staff with open arms and taken to our hotel in Leon. That evening we had the privilege of getting to know the staff at Las Tías while enjoying a beautiful sunset along the beach.

The next morning we got a full tour of Las Tías and saw the actual market where Las Tías formed. Throughout the day we helped the kids practice English, played games and served a nutritious meal of “Gallo pinto” (rice and beans) with fried plantains.

All the children have been so sweet and outgoing and love practicing their English with us. We finished off the day flying paper airplanes, jumping rope and giving piggy back rides.

Our last night in León was bittersweet as we had a final dinner with the Las Tías staff and bid them farewell. I’ve been so proud to represent Spark Ventures on this trip and have already met many new friends in my brief time in Nicaragua.

After learning more about the local culture in León we headed to our next city, Granada, where the adventure continues.

Stay tuned to learn more about my travels, my time at Las Tías and my experiences with Spark!
